Cushion Care and Cleaning: Gently brush off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric and wipe up any spills as soon as they occur. Perhaps you have a small area that is hard to landscape because it seems it is just unusable space. Many homes have a small nook or cranny between the house and the fence or garage that ends up being a place to store everything and is an eyesore. Convert that area into a pebble garden. A pebble garden is constructed of various sizes and colors of pebbles. The pebbles are beach, quartz, stone or other types of pebbles. Use pebbles to cover the entire surface or to create a walkway.
Cover the entire area with a mixture of several types of pebbles. Leave open areas to access the soil for planting. Plant succulents like hen and chicks or different types of ice plants. Include alyssum or coreopsis. These are small plants. Plant larger succulents like yucca, sun daisies or a pine leaf.
Place a small stone bench in the corner of the pebble garden along with a water feature or fire pit. String lanterns along the pathway to the bench and water feature or fire pit to light the area for evening entertainment.
Construct an arbor over the entranceway to the pebble garden. Place planter pots with hibiscus on each side of the arbor and plant any type of vining plant behind the hibiscus. The vining plant will eventually climb over the arbor, creating a wall to the pebble garden.

Clean the Teak Patio Furniture
Apply a 2 to 1 solution of mild detergent with water to the teak patio furniture. Use a soft bristle brush to help remove the gray patina. The brush will do a good job of removing most of the patina if your teak patio set is only a few years old.

To guard against this weathering process and to maintain a desired look, apply coats of a hardwood oil. The frequency of necessary oil applications depends on the intensity of the outdoor elements. The furniture has already been oiled prior to packing, and it is recommended that an oil treatment be repeated at least once a year. Giving the furniture an extra treatment before exposing to rain will prolong the new look and ensure a longer life.
After eucalyptus furniture has weathered, it can be restored if desired by sanding down the surface, cleaning it, and then applying oil to prevent more weathering. To clean it, mix one tablespoon of bleach, five tablespoons of a gentle dishwashing liquid, and a gallon of water, and gently scrub the mixture on the surface of the wood with a soft bristle brush. Rinse the solution from the furniture, and allow it to dry completely in the sun. Developed for use in high humidity, the furniture is best not stored in centrally heated areas, as that could lead to excessive drying out of the wood.
Wood that becomes saturated with water and left over an extended period without drying out is more likely to warp and rot. The bases of furniture legs are probably the most vulnerable when it comes to water damage. If wood furniture is kept in the grass, at the poolside, or on a surface that collects rain water, the legs can become saturated. Covering the bottoms of each leg with rubberized material or small sections of cedar fencing material will help protect furniture from rotting from the bottom up.
Supplement lack of ground space with a vertical garden that adds a wall of color outdoors and enhances privacy. Vertical gardens are formed by training vines of foliage or flowering plants on poles, stakes or trellises. The lower ends or legs of these support structures require firm placement, which you achieve by placing them in large containers filled with soil. A concrete planter box is sturdy enough to support a trellis with weighty, climbing vines. Such planters are readily available in gardening or home department stores or made at home by pouring concrete between two plywood forms. These planters come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes; select rectangular ones at least 2 feet wide and 2 to 3 inches thick.
Fill the concrete planter with soil before planting the desired vining plant seedlings and the trellis in it. The planter dresses up a particular spot and is heavy enough to resist toppling over due to strong winds while accommodating vines with weighty vegetables or fruit.
Large pots at least 18 to 20 inches wide provide sufficient support to smaller vining plants. Make a bamboo tepee trellis by arranging the tops of three or four same-length poles together and securing them with garden wire. Insert the legs of the bamboo pole trellis into the container, and plant vegetable seedlings around it.
Use larger pots if the space allows it, increasing the measurements of the trellis to fit it appropriately. A large trellis in a small pot topples easily with the weight of growing vegetables or fruit.
A window box is a functional container for growing lightweight vines right outside your bedroom or living room. Insert hooks in the contained soil, just behind each plant and extend copper wire from each to reach the desired spot on the wall, just above the window frame. Secure each growing vine to a copper wire with soft cord so it forms a vertical wall or natural curtain.
Whiskey half barrels are large enough to support a tripod or traditional bean pole trellis. Place this container strategically near your front entrance or on a porch step to add rustic charm to the surrounding area. Half-size barrels are available in large gardening stores and make good containers for planting vegetables such as potatoes too.
Insert four evenly-spaced poles around the rim of the barrel, each angled slightly inwards so the tops meet. Use the additional space in the center to grow shade-loving plants such as lettuce.
Adenium, or desert rose, is becoming increasingly popular as Asian and American growers have developed ways to cultivate the plant for wholesale distribution. Desert rose plants prefer little water during the winter, when the plants hibernate. In the summer, when the growth is vigorous, the plants can be watered every day. The soil must drain well and not retain moisture. A mixture of 1/2 sand and 1/2 potting soil works well. Avoid getting the leaves wet.
Desert rose tolerates a liquid fertilizer during the warmer months when the plant is growing aggressively, but the fertilizer must be applied correctly. Water the plant first, then fertilize. Make sure that both the water and the fertilizer are able to drain completely. Fertilizing without first watering can burn the roots.
Place desert rose in a sunny window. These plants grow well outdoors as long as the nighttime temperatures don't get below freezing. In colder climates, bring the plants inside during the evenings and in the winter, or keep them indoors where they can get year-round sunshine.
Since the flowers grow from the tips of the stalks, regularly trimming the plants to encourage more stalks to grow is the best way to get more flowers. Cut off the tip of each stalk just after the flower dies. Wear heavy latex or rubber gloves--the sap is poisonous and easily absorbed into the skin.
