There are people who find it satisfying to help plants grow--watching new shoots come up, seeing a transplanted tree bear fruit, or stopping to smell the roses. One of the best garden tips is to use vermiculite. This naturally-occurring substance is a good way to enrich topsoil, encourage growth and help new plants root. Work vermiculite into your garden scheduleso that all of your plants will be healthy, strong and thriving. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Mix sticky or heavy soil up to half and half with vermiculite to promote air channels that make it easier for plants to dig their roots down into.
2Add vermiculite to sandy soil to help it retain the water your plants need to grow strong and healthy.
3Put vermiculite around the base of plants, shrubs and trees after the last big summer rain to help retain moisture through the dryer months.
4Line the hole you dig for transplants with vermiculite and then water it thoroughly. Set the plant in the hole and cover the roots with a mixture of vermiculite and good soil to encourage strong and healthy roots.
5Start seeds and cuttings in vermiculite, and they will grow more quickly than ones started in plain soil or water.
