How to Make Your Own Outdoor Furniture

While there is an unlimited choice of outdoor furniture that can be built by enterprising hands, the simplest is often the best. A peg chair, so called because one peg fits through the other, can be a comfortable and easy-to-create piece of furniture, suitable for any outdoor environment. Requiring very little in the way of design, you can make the peg chair by following these simple steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Cut the 2 x 12 into two pieces. The first should be 3 feet 9 inches long, and the second 5 feet 3 inches.

    2

Measure 2 feet 3 inches up both sides of the shorter piece and mark it. The 1-1/2 feet will eventually form the seat portion of your chair, while the measured out 2 feet (plus a little) will be one of the chair's two legs.

    3

Cut straight in three inches from the marks you just made, then straight down the 2 feet 3 inches to the board's end. The shorter board should now look like a bulbous "T" shape, with a 6 inch wide segment emerging directly from a 1 foot by 1-1/2 foot rectangle. This is the peg of the final peg chair.

    4

Using the jig saw, cut a 2 inch by 6 inch notch in the horizontal center of the longer board. Align this notch vertically, exactly 1 foot from the bottom of the board.

    5

Slide the narrow portion of the shorter board through the notch on the larger board. Go ahead and sit on it to test it out --- the tension each board places on the other will allow a person to sit comfortably in the cradled angle at the joint between the two boards.

    6

Sand the chair. Round out the edges for a cleaner appearance and make sure no splinters protrude from the surface.

    7

Apply a coat of stain to darken the wood. This will not only help coat and smooth the wood, but will give it a more professional appearance.

    8

Apply a wax sealant. This will protect your new furniture from rain damage.

    9

Build four more. Once you've tried one out, you'll be hard-pressed to deny all of your guests the same pleasure.
